Untitled | Joel Grimaldi

This powerful near-apocalyptic bench suggests a galactic furnishing for a dark star. More like a couch in steel than a bench, the handsome industrial hulk of a settee easily seats three people and is surprisingly comfortable, thanks to three gentle upright indentations and the wonderfully laid back angle of the seat — literally. The surface is painstakingly hand-punched with tiny squares to create a decorative even delicate geometric grid. Powder-coated surface permits withstanding the elements.

Joel Grimaldi is a sculptor, master craftsman and steel fabricator who owns a custom metal fabrication business, Metallogix Design & Fabrication, Inc., in Utica NY. In addition to fabrication of functional steel elements, he has designed and fabricated numerous metal sculptures working with steel, aluminum and other materials. His clients include the City of New York, which awarded him a contract to design a vendor cart prototype. He was lead fabricator for an inaugural public art commission permanently installed at Griffiss International Sculpture Garden, in Rome, NY, entitled Crown, and designed and co-fabricated with international artist Rainer Wehner. His functional sculptures have consistently garnered acclaim and awards at local venues such as Sculpture Space in Utica, NY.
