Spirituals such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” originated from enslaved Africans and embrace profound emotion and enduring hope, forming the foundation of modern Gospel music in all its diversity. Guest host Soloman Howard (Macbeth and The Magic Flute, 2015) takes you on a Sunday morning tour of this inspiring genre. Artists include: Jasmine Barnes, Helena Brown, Joshua Conyers, Carl DuPont, Taylor-Alexis DuPont, Briana Elyse Hunter, Jawan CM Jenkins, Tesia Kwarteng, Key'mon Murrah, Steven D. Winners of the Simcha Prize at the 2017 International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam, this crossover quintet will engage your mind and heart, and they might even make you laugh. Described as “a real treat for open minds,” Big Galut(e) presents a dazzling variety of music from the Jewish Diaspora’s many homelands: rare classics, rollicking Klezmer dances, sizzling tangos, heartfelt folk songs and Yiddish-flavored takes on classic opera.
