In Handel’s Xerxes , one of the great empire builders of the ancient world meets his match in Romilda, a woman who refuses to bow to his advances. Dramaturg Kip Cranna speaks on “The Enlightened Despot: Handel and the Age of Reason,” and members of the Young Artists Program introduce similar characters from across the opera repertory.
