Gods and Mortals Digital Program
Overview
Gods and Mortals celebrates the work of Richard Wagner with selections from some of his most popular operas, including The Ring Cycle and Tannhäuser, as well as some of his lesser-known works like Die Feen (The Fairies).
“At a time when the world can feel strikingly small — confined to a bedroom and a laptop — Wagner’s grand works remind us of feeling larger-than-life. His fascination with mythology and the natural world will propel us as we take the Festival outdoors.” — Francesca Zambello
The staged concert will star Alexandria Shiner and Ian Koziara. Gods and Mortals is conducted by Joseph Colaneri and directed by Francesca Zambello.

Explore gods and mortals
Nick Richardson
Gods, and mortals, and Wagner – oh my! A concert in the woods has never felt so mysterious yet so familiar. The melodies penned by the German composer have long been a part of our cultural consciousness. Even if you don’t recognize the titles of Wagner’s operas, you’ve almost certainly heard (and hummed) his rousing tunes.
Wagner matched the grand scale of his music with bold storytelling, writing his own libretto for each opera. His works tackle nature, magic, and the psyche. He found inspiration from Norse mythology – enough inspiration to write four full-length operas, together known as the Ring Cycle (Der Ring des Nibelungen). Other sources for his works include the legends of the Holy Grail (for Parsifal) and the Flying Dutchman (for his opera of the same name).
An epic composer telling epic stories begs for an epic venue. Join us in the great outdoors for a heart-racing adventure through Wagner’s repertoire.
Further Reading on the Web
Wagner changed the way we watch and listen to opera, from composition, to instrumentation, to the theater space itself. BBC Music magazine highlights Wagner’s revolutionary ideas and breaks down each of his ten major operas. (Craving more? Read Bayan Northcott’s commentary on Wagner’s meandering musical trajectory, also from BBC Music magazine.)
Wagner, the villain? Wagner’s notoriety stems not only from his theatrical work but from his anti-Semitic essays and his posthumous connection to Hitler and the Third Reich. Around the world, symphonies and opera companies grapple with programming Wagner’s works. In Israel, his music is not banned outright, but it remains unwelcome. Italian journalist Giulio Meotti argues in favor of a ban in his op-ed for Israeli news website Ynetnews; on the other hand, Alex Ross in The New Yorker makes “The Case for Wagner in Israel.” Classical radio station WQXR’s editorial “Cancel Culture: How We Deal with Wagner in the 21st Century” presents the historiography of Wagner’s anti-Semitism and suggests that responsible programming involves addressing and discussing Wagner’s controversial opinions.
Walking down the aisle to Wagner: The tune we know as “Here Comes the Bride” is actually the Bridal Chorus from Wagner’s opera Lohengrin. Read about this tradition’s royal roots in TIME magazine. Washington Jewish Week explains why it’s unlikely you’ll hear Lohengrin in a synagogue or temple.
From friend to foe: Classic FM explains how the friendship between Wagner and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche fell flat after one criticized the other’s music. (It’s not in the direction you’d think.)
The sound of Gesamtkunstwerk: Wagner’s idea of a “total work of art” isn’t a far cry from the American musical’s synthesis of music, theater, and dance. Trace Wagner’s legacy from Germany to Broadway in this feature from the Festival’s Fanfare magazine.
Audio and Video Resources
Did you miss out on Die Feen? Though the Festival did not get to stage Wagner’s first opera last year, we did produce an animated video of it for our “Glimmerglass Glimpses” series. You can watch this mini adaptation featuring Alexandria Shiner, Ian Koziara, Eric Owens, and members of the Young Artist Program here on our website.
Wagner and children’s cartoons – a perfect match! Wagner remains a favorite in animation. Elmer Fudd hunts for Bugs Bunny in their performance of The Valkyrie. Nickelodeon’s Hey Arnold! parodies The Valkyrie and Bizet’s Carmen in a dream sequence where Helga tries to break up Arnold and Ruth’s union.
Turning music inside-out: Watch baritone Michael Volle sing “O du, mein holder Abendstern” from Wagner’s Tannhäuser in an MRI machine. Scientists at the University of Freiberg had singers perform in MRI machines to see if pitch and loudness affect the body’s vocal articulators (lips, tip of the tongue, soft palate).
Get a taste for the mystery and ambiguity in Wagner’s music with this video from the Royal Opera House. Music Director Antonio Pappano explains the famous “Tristan chord” from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde.
Go ahead, laugh at Wagner! Singer and comedian Anna Russell lampoons Wagner’s Ring Cycle in her classic sketch , “The Ring of the Nibelungs (An Analysis).” Her summary is hilarious, but it’s made even funnier by her physical comedy.
For the Bookworm
Add Wagner to your summer reading list; or rather, add British actor, director, and writer Simon Callow, whose biography Being Wagner: The Story of the Most Provocative Composer Who Ever Lived is an enjoyable and insightful look at Wagner’s life and times.
The New Yorker’s music critic Alex Ross has received a lot of attention from Wagnerian groups and popular music websites alike for his recent book Wagnerism: Art and Politics in the Shadow of Music. In it, Ross covers how Wagner initiated a cultural shift beyond music, one that touched his contemporaries and leaves ripple effects today.
If all this talk of rings makes you think of The Lord of the Rings, you’re not alone. Scholar Jamie McGregor compares Tolkien’s novels to Wagner’s Ring Cycle, arguing that Tolkien aimed to correct Wagner’s work. McGregor’s article, “Two Rings to Rule Them All: A Comparative Study of Tolkien and Wagner,” was published in the academic journal Mythlore and is available as a PDF.
