Sound Cues Created by: Joel Moran
Various Bells, Chimes, and Canon shot sound cues were loaded on to a drum-pad and triggered by a percussionist in the trap-room. These effects were routed to speakers in various locations. Additionally, there was a rack of chimes in the trap room also played by the percussionist and mic’d to speaker locations throughout the house. The bells at the top of ACT III were performed by 3 percussionists.
Percussionist 1. Trap room. Drum pad and Mic’d chimes to house
Percussionist 2. In the pit
Percussionist 3. Rear of house with a rack of chimes
During Act II, there is a radio/intercom on Scarpia’s desk. (seen above) The offstage Banda and Chorus moments play through this radio. Additionally, Scarpia communicates with henchmen and Tosca hears torture and communicates through this intercom. There are 2 small (negligible) sound effects that play through the radio. For the offstage musical moments, we had a microphone in the trap room that was routed through an IEM transmitter to a small IEM receiver pack inside the radio. For the intercom moments, a handheld microphone DSL was routed through the radio. The microphone plugged into the radio is not practical but serves as the “on” switch for the unit. When the microphone is plugged in, the unit powers on. When Tosca and Scarpia tussle over the radio and Tosca rips the radio off the desk, the microphone stays with Scarpia… microphone gets unplugged… unit powers off to prevent any unwanted RF noises through the rest of the act and top of ACT III. The radio will require a 12v battery and an IEM transmitter/receiver. Additional radio instructions are included inside the prop.
**Additional royalty required for use of sound effects.

During intermission, selections from the book “ON TYRANNY” by Timothy D. Snyder,
were projected onto the downstage blackout curtain. The text was in a large white font and was run in a repeating loop throughout the intermission. Our Q-lab file is available for this, but it could also easily be accomplished with a simple PowerPoint file.
