The Board and staff of The Glimmerglass Festival fondly remember architect and trustee Hugh Hardy, designer of our theater and Festival friend and advisor for more than 35 years. His unique opera theater design capitalized on the company’s rural surroundings while providing audience members the opportunity to experience intimate performances of opera and musical theater. Hugh made spaces that both artists and audiences want to inhabit, and we will always remember his glorious smile and happy way of leaving a meeting or social occasion with a “Cheerio!” We are among those in the arts who were fortunate to have worked with and known this generous man.

It has been said artists paint as a way of being remembered that they lived on this planet and at this time. I think architects do as well . His work will be admired for years to come…
Hugh Hardy hired Cindy Dobie and Myself to paint the ceiling of The Glimmerglass Opera House when it was under construction. From there I started painting sets that first season…. First performance was Onegin. Hugh was a great guy and designer and had a lot of faith in young people. After our first meeting at the construction site we had lunch at Tom Goodyear’s house… another great guy who believed in us !
